What Is Family Home Evening?

When I first joined the church I heard everyone talking about FHE.  I thought that it might be code for some exclusive LDS club that I might later join.

Turns out, FHE is for everyone, all kinds of families.  For Family Home Evening, leaders counsel families to set aside one night a week, usually Monday, for the family.  We’re supposed to teach our children, have fun, set examples of gospel principles, and be with each other.

A church website defines FHE as  “a special time set aside each week that brings family members together and strengthens their love for each other, helps them draw closer to Heavenly Father, and encourages them to live righteously. ”

Family Home Evening isn’t the same as family scripture study, although FHEs might include scripture study.  It’s about family fun and togetherness.

Family home evenings should be scheduled once a week as a time for discussions of gospel principles, recreation, work projects, skits, songs around the piano, games, special refreshments, and family prayers. Like iron links in a chain, this practice will bind a family together, in love, pride, tradition, strength, and loyalty.”

What are some of your favorite memories of spending time with your parents as you grew up?  These might give you insights to watch your children will remember about you years from now.  I hope mine remember that I set aside a special night for our family each week.  I know that they will be strengthened by this practice throughout the rest of their lives.
